Gagosian Shop is pleased to announce a talk and book signing with curator and art historian Matthew Israel to celebrate his new book The Big Picture: Contemporary Art in 10 Works by 10 Artists, published by Prestel.

How do we understand contemporary art today? Where do we start? Where do we end up? Israel responds to these questions through an in-depth exploration of ten of today’s most exciting contemporary artworks. With a clear eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the panoramic view, Israel reveals the stories behind works by ten artists over a span of fifteen years, connecting them to larger social and artistic contexts. The works range from photography, painting, and sculpture to performance, installation, video, film, and public art. Included are Andreas Gursky’s striking, large-scale color photograph Rhine II, Ai Weiwei’s powerful Remembering (an installation of children’s backpacks following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake), and Kara Walker’s A Subtlety, which was installed in Brooklyn’s former Domino Sugar Refinery. Accessible and insightful, The Big Picture presents an indelible portrait of the multifaceted, mercurial world of contemporary art in the twenty-first century.
